Zero-Click Searches: New Content Optimization Tactics for Bloggers

zero-click searches

Zero click searches means users get the answers to their questions or queries directly from google without clicking on any website. They now account for 60-75% of query on google, specially on mobile phones, meaning users get answers directly on webpage without clicking through. This trend is driven by AI overview and featured snippets which provide instant answers.

These answers are available in the following manner-

  • Featured snippet- answer available in the topmost webpage box
  • Knowledge panel- information available in the box present on the right side of the screen
  • ‘People also ask’ section
  • Google maps result
  • Weather apps, calculator results

In simple words, zero click search means user types any query on a search engine, it provides with instant answer om the webpage, this leads to the user to not open any website to find that particular answer, causing to ‘zero clicks’ hence, zero click searches.

WHY IS THIS TREND INCREASING

Google is making a shift from merely being a search engine to now also being an answer engine, focus shifting from showing links to now giving direct answers. It focuses on providing quick and correct answers to its users. Factual question queries are now being answered directly by google, saving time of its users and providing them with quick solutions, increasing customer satisfaction and leading to better user experience. Nowadays most of the searches are being done on mobile phones where the screen is small and so is the patience to scroll endlessly, moreover google also wants its users to put in minimal efforts, hence the increased trend of zero click searches.

HOW IS THIS PROVING TO BE A CHALLENGE FOR BLOGGERS

Zero click searches are proving to be a challenge for users because of the following reasons-

  • Website traffic is decreasing- The main source of traffic for websites and bloggers is organic searches. Since google has now started to provide answers, the traffic on any website is decreasing significantly and rapidly causing a reason for tension among bloggers.
  • Revenue impact- Majority of bloggers earn through advertisements, collaborations and affiliate marketing. If the traffic on the website is reduced, it will lead to lower ad impressions and affiliate marketing directly impacting the revenue.
  • Harder competition- Earlier the bloggers had to compete with other bloggers to rank first on the search engine but since the interference of AI searches, bloggers have to now compete with search engines like Google itself to make their website visible to the audience.
  • Lower CTR- CTR or Click Through Rate is a digital marketing metric that measures the percentage of people who click on a specific link, site or ad after seeing it. Even if your content is ranking higher, but google is showing the answer on the front page, the website’s CTR would be low because of no clicks.
  • With generative AI generating summaries for users, bloggers find it difficult to maintain website traffic.

TIPS TO OPTIMIZE ZERO CLICK CONTENT

  • Use question-based headings- Instead of using normal headings, use headings starting with the words like ‘why does…’, ‘how to…’, ‘what is…’ etc. This optimizes the search engine results and puts the website on top. Google frequently converts these question-based headings into snippets.
  • Instant answer approach- Explain the answer first in short in about 40-50 words, like giving an overview then give the detailed explanation. This allows the user to understand the content of the website and also gives the websites more clicks.
  • Use long tailed and intent based keywords- Long tailed keywords are specific, multi word search phases that target specific or detailed user intent. Intent based keywords are those keywords which not only explain the topic but also explain the reason behind searching the particular topic.
  • Update content regularly- search engines love fresh and up-to date content. Therefore, update the content regularly and put up fresh content on a frequent basis, signalling search engines that the website is active and relevant.

ADAPTING TO A ZERO CLICK ERA

To put it briefly, getting ready for a zero click world is more than necessary in today’s day and age. With search engines having the ability to answer questions directly, bloggers will now have to start writing content not to rank higher but to be visible in the google overview box.

Optimizing the content for features like featured snippet and knowledge panel will lead to the content reaching desired users even without any direct clicks on the website. This involves giving clear, short and up to the point answers rather than going in unnecessary details. The focus should be on getting recognized by google overview section even if it causes less clicking on the actual website.
